Mrs. Red-bellied Woodpecker made a rare appearance at the feeder recently, and I was able to snap a photo before she flew off again. You can tell the difference between male and female Red-bellied Woodpeckers by looking at their heads. Males have a red crown that extends to their beak. Females have red only on the nape of their neck which, because I’m so used to seeing the males, makes them look bald to me.
The female is much more shy than the male. She only visits the feeder when no other birds are present, and I have to sneak up to the window very carefully so I don’t startle her.
