My favorite rudbeckias are the double-flowering varieties. ‘Cherokee Sunset’, a must-have in my flowerbeds, sports semi-double and double flowers, but ‘Maya’ is fully-double.
The cheery gold flowers are stuffed with petals that surround a big, brown eye. The plants grow only 18 inches tall, so they are perfect for the middle-of-the-border.
Like other rudbeckias, ‘Maya’ thrives in full sun or partial-shade. The plants sometimes overwinter in my garden, but I usually start new ones from seed each year. ‘Maya’ looks especially fetching next to bold-colored dahlias or zinnias.
Last summer I planted a clump next to Aster ‘Milady Lilac’ and they looked great together.

Beautiful pictures; the Colours provide such an eye catching combination. I’ve never grown Maya. Should have bought a packet when I ordered from Swallowtail. I did order a packet of Sahara Rudbeckia along with Cherokee Sunset, Denver Daisy, and Moroccan Sun.
When are you planning to start your seeds? I think I’ll wait until near the end of February. I have most everything ready! I don’t think I’ll sow as many Calendula this year. James
Thanks, James! I ordered ‘Sahara’ from Swallowtail, too. Those dusky colors look intriguing! The rudbeckias will be the first thing I sprout. If I follow my notes from last year (when I started them a week earlier than I used to), I should be sowing seeds in 2 weeks. Unlike you, I’m not exactly ready. 🙂 It’s going to be a crazy couple of weeks! Oh and I wanted to mention to you that I found a source for ‘Latah’ tomatoes, so I’m going to give them a try. Thanks for the tip!
Glad you are going to try the Latah. They tend to be a little bit of a problem keeping them tidy. I usually try to keep them tied to laths to keep them in place. But they ripen on the vine for me and are very tasty.
I was so impressed by the Maya Rudbeckia. Have been searching for seed, but since I have my seeds bought, the cost of shipping, handling and sale tax make the seed too costly! Will have to wait until next year. James
Thanks for the information on ‘Latah’. I’ll make sure to keep the plants well tied up!
Everyone once in awhile I find a garden center that sells some of the rudbeckias as bedding plants (usually they are in with the perennials, since officially that’s what they are in warmer climates). I don’t remember if ‘Maya’ has ever been among them, but it’s worth keeping your eyes peeled!
