As spiders go, Larry’s not the sharpest tool in the shed. He built his web between the side mirror and the door of my husband’s vehicle. I think it’s funny, my husband not so much.
I discovered Larry the other day as we were on our way to a meeting. We stopped off for a quick errand and I waited in the truck. When my husband returned and started the engine, I rolled down my window and let out a little shriek. There was Scary Larry just inches away. He saw me and scurried under the mirror.
Larry would’ve been fine if he’d just stayed hidden, but when we were stopped at a traffic light he ventured out onto his web again. The light turned green and off we went. Poor Larry didn’t know what hit him. His girth caused the web to start ripping. Soon there were only a few strands left and Larry was flapping in the 30-mph breeze like a tiny kite. “Hang on, Larry!” I yelled.
We had quite a ways to drive until the next stop light and I didn’t think Larry had a fighting chance. Surprisingly, the little trooper held on and at the next red light he had the good sense to crawl up what was left of his web and hide under the mirror again.
It didn’t appear Larry did any repairs during our hour-long meeting and I didn’t see him at all during the ride home, but the next morning he was back, no worse for the wear, and with an impressive new web.
