I could see the silhouette in the distance, but the birds didn’t seem at all alarmed by the giant hawk sitting in a nearby tree all puffed up for protection against the below-zero temperatures (look in the middle of the photo just under the horizontal utility wires):
If it had been a Sharp-shinned or Cooper’s Hawk there wouldn’t have been a bird in sight, but this was a Red-tailed Hawk. While a Red-tailed might occasionally eat a bigger feeder bird like a starling or blackbird, they prefer feasting on rodents like rabbits, mice, voles and ground squirrels.
He sat in the same spot for almost an hour before flying off to better hunting grounds.
