Penstemon ‘Phoenix Violet’: The Three-Season Annual

In early June I wrote about a Penstemon (annual) that I was trying for the first time called ‘Phoenix Violet.’ I purchased two plants in mid-May. They were impulse buys from a garden center that I tucked into a patio planter.

Well I’m certainly getting my money’s worth. I gave up on all my pots and planters in early September because of our wacky weather. I haven’t watered, weeded or deadheaded since then, but ‘Phoenix Violet’ continues to bloom happily while all my potted petunias and Proven Winners plants have long since dried up and died of neglect.

My plants have been blooming for 18 weeks now. You can’t ask much more from a flower growing in a Zone 5 climate.

“Phoenix Violet’ grows 18 to 24 inches tall. If you need a plant that will bloom all summer long and thrive despite neglect, I highly suggest you look for this pretty purple flower at your local garden center next spring.
