Before Mother Nature pelted us with giant shards of ice in September, my asters were coming along nicely. A new cultivar I planted in May was aster (Aster novi belgii) ‘Peter Harrison’. I was impressed at how heavily the plant bloomed after only being in its new location for 4 months. I didn’t fertilize it or do anything special to it. It just decided to bloom its little heart out:
‘Peter Harrison’ is a bushy cultivar that grows 12 to 15 inches tall with pinkish-lavender flowers. The plants begin blooming in late summer/early fall and the show lasts for many weeks.
This aster looks lovely growing alongside dark-rose sedums like ‘Thunderhead’ or ‘Neon’.
‘Peter Harrison’ is hardy in Zones 4-8. I’m looking forward to seeing how long this cultivar will bloom in the fall when it’s not so rudely interrupted by severe weather.
