I still have plenty of “snowbirds” (Dark-eyed Juncos) visiting my platform feeders and hopping around in the grass in my backyard.
But I know it’s spring because the goldfinches have finally molted from their drab olive-gray winter feathers into their spring breeding duds:
Over the next few weeks the juncos will migrate to far northern Wisconsin and Canada where they’ll spend their summer breeding season, and I won’t see them again until October.
