Peanut-eating Wren

The House wrens arrived for the season last week. It’s always exciting to hear the first wren song of the season.

But they can be little bullies. This one drove a chickadee out of one of the birdhouses in our backyard on the first day he arrived.

This particular bird is also a bit of a weirdo. He eats peanuts! At first I thought he was just looking for ants or other insects in the peanut cup, but he started to visit the cup regularly and eventually I saw him pecking away at some peanuts. Wrens are insect eaters.

It’s interesting to note that as I was writing this, a goldfinch landed on our suet feeder and took a few bites. Goldfinches are solely seed-eaters!

I guess this time of year you take your protein where you can get it!
