My Allium ‘Millenium’ plants were once again the biggest pollinator magnets in my flowerbeds.
These plants start blooming in very late July, and the show continues through August. Bees, butterflies, moths, wasps and beetles make the flowers hum with activity.
Allium ‘Millenium’ grows 15 to 20 inches tall. I’ve mentioned in the past that this is a Zone 5 plant, but it sure doesn’t act like one. I lost so many plants over the winter (including Zone 2 plants that I thought were impossible to kill!), but I didn’t lose a single ‘Millenium.’ And some of those plants were growing in an exposed, north-facing wall.
I doubled my collection of these plants this spring. Pollinators can use all the help they can get, and I like that this perennial blooms in late summer when the daylilies are finished for the season and other perennials are looking tired.
The plants have no pest or disease problems and need no staking or deadheading. They do have an onion scent, but you won’t notice it unless you stick your nose in the blooms or fracture the foliage.
For the last several years, including this one, ‘Millenium’ has been my favorite perennial to grow.
