My friend and I were lamenting that a number of our favorite hiking trails and natural areas are either damaged, destroyed or under water because of the flooding rains we’ve had over the last several weeks. We couldn’t think of anywhere we could go where we might be able to hike and do a little birdwatching without needing waders or a kayak or a backhoe.
So we got a kick out of finding two Sandhill Cranes hanging out in an elementary school parking lot on Saturday. We think they were juveniles because they were completely unafraid of us.
One bird was trying to take a nap.
The other one was preening.
It’s the closest I’ve ever gotten to a Sandhill Crane before.
