A Pop of Yellow

I rarely see goldfinches on my platform feeders. They prefer to use tube feeders instead, so this male (with a female behind him) really stood out the other day.

Goldfinches are one of the last songbirds to nest each year because their main food supply–thistle seed–isn’t available until later in the summer.

In late August and September the neighborhood is full of the sounds of peeping goldfinch fledglings begging to be fed.

The tube feeders have been a little packed lately, so maybe this pair decided rather than wait for their turn they would just eat from the platform feeder instead.
