Some birders are saying this should be a great winter to see some of the irruptive species like Red-breasted Nuthatches because the tree seed crop in Canada was not very good. That means some songbirds will move further south into the northern United States to find winter food sources.
I already have at least 2 Red-breasted Nuthatches visiting my feeders. They have been extremely busy caching seeds. Occasionally they stop to chow down on the suet cake I put out now that the weather has gotten much cooler.
It’s supposed to be a good winter for Pine Siskins as well, but so far I haven’t seen any.
