Hawkwatching

Guess whose baaaaack? The horrible clunk on my bay window at 6am was my first hint. This bird of prey knows just how to swoop in to drive the songbirds into the window and hope one is injured enough to not be able to get away in time.

He missed on that particular pass, but stayed around for the rest of the day to try again and again.

The songbirds were onto him, however, so for awhile he eyed a squirrel almost as big as he is. Mr. Squirrel was oblivious at first, but when he finally spotted the Cooper’s Hawk staring at him from atop the birdfeeder, he scrambled into the bushes as quick as his little legs could carry him.

They sure are beautiful creatures. I just wish they’d hunt the neighborhood mice instead—we have plenty of those!
