I’m increasing the number of dianthus plants I will sprout from seed this year. The last 2 summers have been extremely wet and these flowers haven’t cared one bit. They have been the salvation of my flowerbeds while most everything else got a fungus or a bacterial disease or just plain drowned. Plus they bloom just a little bit later than most of the other annuals, so they are a nice mid-season pick-me-up.
Some of my favorite cultivars include ‘Amazon Neon Rose Magic’ which grows 18-24 inches tall and the Jolt series (especially Cherry and Pink Jolt) which grows 16-20 inches tall. The plants do well in full sun to part-shade and no pests or diseases bother them.
