Cheers for Calliopsis

Some of my zinnias and asters are now croaking completely because of my carelessness with the rabbit and deer repellent I sprayed on them a few weeks ago.

But my calliopsis flowers have shrugged off my stupidity and look good so far.

Calliopsis tinctoria (I grow ‘Finest Mix’) grows 24 inches tall in sun or part-sun.

I start my plants from seed indoors even though they are supposedly difficult to transplant (I’ve never had a problem). But you can easily sprout them outdoors after the last frost date, and the seeds are very inexpensive.

I leave some of the spent seed heads on the plants for the birds, and also so I can enjoy a few volunteer plants the following year.
