With some bird species it’s easy to tell the difference between males and females. The Northern Cardinal falls in that category. This is the male:
And this is the female:
Goldfinches are easy to tell apart in the summer when the males are a flashy, bright-yellow, but it gets trickier in the winter when both the males and females are a dull yellowish-brown (top right):
It took me awhile to realize that there was a difference between the male and female Red-bellied Woodpeckers. The male has red patch on both his crown and nape:
But the female’s red patch is only on the nape:
As for Blue Jays, you’ll have to ask them!
