When I grew Amaryllis ‘Hercules’ in 2011 the first scape reached 16 inches tall (the plant is listed as growing 18-24 inches), and it showed off with 7 buds that eventually opened into lovely salmon-pink flowers.
This time I wasn’t so lucky. I think I may have gotten a deformed or mutant bulb. The first scape grew only 12 inches tall and the 3 buds on top opened at the same time so there wasn’t enough room for all of them to expand.
The show only lasted about 3 days and then the flowers started to wilt already. Perhaps they were exhausted from trying to push into each other to open fully!
I almost tossed the bulb, but I gave it a reprieve when I noticed a second scape peeking up from the top of the bulb. Maybe my bulb will redeem itself on the second try!
