Trumpeter Swans are common at some of the places my friend and I like to hike at in Wisconsin including Horicon Marsh. The first time a flock of these birds flew over us we squealed with excitement because it sounds so funny when many birds are “trumpeting” at once (and yes their call does sound like a muted trumpet!).
Fun facts about the Trumpeter Swan (courtesy of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s All About Birds website):
“Trumpeter Swans demand superlatives: they’re our biggest native waterfowl, stretching to 6 feet in length and weighing more than 25 pounds – almost twice as massive as a Tundra Swan. Getting airborne requires a lumbering takeoff along a 100-yard runway.”
