Two weeks ago I saw two Golden-crowned Kinglets flitting around in the oak trees that surround our yard. Now there are several Ruby-throated Kinglets visiting my backyard. They like searching for insects on the hardwood shrubs like my viburnum and serviceberry.
Kinglets are constantly in motion, so they are very challenging to photograph. Thankfully this one sat on a branch for a bit to do some preening and scratching, and I was able to snap a few photos of him.
Ruby-crowned Kinglets are tiny—even smaller than a House Wren. Here’s a fun fact about them from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s All About Birds website: The Ruby-crowned Kinglet is a tiny bird that lays a very large clutch of eggs—there can be up to 12 in a single nest. Although the eggs themselves weigh only about a fiftieth of an ounce, an entire clutch can weigh as much as the female herself.
