A Bustling Bird Neighborhood

For the first time ever we have a pair of chickadees and a pair of House Wrens occupying birdhouses near each other on the same side of the yard.

The chickadees moved in first but when the male wren arrived looking for places for his mate to set up her new home, he quickly started pulling out all of the nesting material that the chickadees spent over a week collecting. I thought they would vacate, but I was wrong. They fought back and the wren moved to the house next door instead. Well, after building nests in three other houses first. The one closest to the chickadees is the one his mate decided was best.

Now both sets of parents take turns trying to run the other birds off the nearby feeders. I’m mostly seeing piggish grackles and Red-winged Blackbirds right now, so it’s not a big loss.
