I was at the Boerner Botanical Garden in Hales Corners recently. Besides perusing their daylily collection, I like to visit their AAS Display garden and see what’s new in the world of annuals. I sprout hundreds of annuals inside from seed each year for my flowerbeds, and I’m always looking for something new and exciting to try.
In the last few years, the number of notable new varieties has shrunk. The focus seems to have shifted from the classic annuals like ageratums, zinnias and salvias to designer annuals like calibrachoas, angelonias, nemesias etc. Many of those plants are sterile so you can’t start them from seed.
This year’s test garden wasn’t very exciting either, but there was one exception–a brand new Profusion Zinnia called ‘Knee High Red.’ I wish I’d taken a better photo, but this will have to do:
