Even though I’ve been seeing robins around the neighborhood for the last 3 weeks, up until recently none had let me get close enough to take their photo. They’ve been too busy scouring trees and shrubs for berries left over from last season.
Last week I had some oranges that were past their prime and I was going to toss them in the compost heap, but instead I decided to slice one in half and set it out in case any woodpeckers or finches wanted to have some bites. During spring migration season in May when I put oranges out for the orioles, I’ve often seen House Finches and Red-bellied Woodpeckers sampling them.
I don’t know if this robin nibbled on the orange at all or if the bright orange color simply made him curious enough to visit the platform feeder to see the other offerings, but now he’s visiting the feeder regularly.
