Attack of the Deadnettle

Lamium maculatum (spotted deadnettle) is one of the few perennials (it’s a groundcover) that can thrive in dry shade. Hostas and astilbes and goatsbeard love shade but also need regular watering to do their best.

I don’t remember planting any lamium in my front flowerbed, but last fall I noticed a tiny tuft of it sticking out between some perennials.

This spring it emerged with a vengeance and has spread about 2- or 3 feet in all directions already. It even covered up a mum that is probably wondering what happened to the sun.

This plant has white or pink flowers (not sure which cultivar this one is!) that bloom from May to July, and the plants are hardy in Zones 3-9.

Lamium maculatum is considered an invasive in our county (gee, I wonder why?), so this one may have seeded itself in my flowerbed. I’m going to pull it out before it takes over my whole flowerbed.
