Common Redpolls are occasional visitors to Southern Wisconsin feeders in winter. It depends on the availability of food in the north. If their favorite sources are in short supply in Canada, they will move south into the states. I’d guess we see redpolls about once every 6 or 7 years.
These little finches aren’t fussy. They’ll eat on the ground or from tube, platform and hopper feeders. I often spot them on tube feeders with with House Finches and Pine Siskins where they easily blend in until you see the little flash of red on their heads.
Common Redpolls prefer black oil and hulled sunflower seeds and Nyjer.
