A hawk swooped over my birdfeeders the other day and it was mass hysteria with songbirds fleeing in every direction. His shadow even made me duck for a second because I was sitting right in front of the window when he swooped by.
I assumed it was a Cooper’s Hawk, but when I used my camera’s zoom lens to take a peek into the oak tree where he landed, I noticed it was actually a Red-tailed Hawk.
They are much larger (about 7 inches longer) than a Cooper’s Hawk, and this is only the second time in 30 years I’ve seen one in my yard.
We don’t have a lot of snow this year, so there should be good hunting for rodents. But this is probably a juvenile bird testing out his skills.
