I can’t remember the last time I saw a Yellow Warbler in my yard. It was probably more than 20 years ago. They are one of the few warblers that hang around in our part of the state throughout the breeding season. Most of the other warbler species travel to northern Wisconsin or Canada to spend the summer.
You can see Yellow Warblers in parks and nature preserves in the city, but not usually in backyards. This little beauty visited for 2 days and hopped around on the lawn snatching flying bugs.
Like all warblers, Yellow Warblers don’t sit still for very long and are challenging to photograph. That’s why it was fun to catch this one in action in my own backyard without too much trouble. My visitor was an immature Yellow Warbler, so it wasn’t sporting its full coloring which looks like this (photo taken by my friend in 2018 after about 5000 tries—those tiny birds are constantly on the move!):
