Hummingbirds are very territorial during the breeding season, but during fall migration time it’s not unusual to see them together at feeders or sipping nectar from flowers in the same garden.
This is the most birds I’ve ever seen together at one time in my yard. I’ve spotted at least 5 different birds buzzing around my backyard throughout the daylight hours over the last week. In fact I hear one squeaking right now as I’m typing this. Sometimes they play nice and other times the backyard is an aerial battleground.
The days are still mild, but the nights are 10-15 degrees colder than a week ago, and it will soon be too hard for these little birds to maintain a safe body temperatures overnight. That’s their signal to start heading south.
This is probably my last opportunity to enjoy their visits until next spring!
