Six years ago I wrote about my ‘Rosalie Figg’ iris surprising me by blooming in late September. I don’t remember it blooming in the fall since then, but last Friday when I was cleaning up my flowerbeds I noticed a stalk with several buds.
I thought if it hurried up and bloomed during our 4-day stretch of weather in the 70s it might just pull off this late-season stunt, but those buds look the same. The high temperatures are back in the mid-50s now, but I don’t see any frosty nights ahead, so maybe it will still bloom before October is over.
As I wrote back in 2016, “‘Rosalie Figge’ grows 36 to 40 inches tall with deep-violet blooms that appear (for most people) in late spring. Plants are drought-resistant and are not bothered by rodents. Bearded irises prefer moist, well-draining soil in full to part-sun.”
