The Word is Out

The handful of American Tree Sparrows visiting my backyard feeders has grown into a larger flock. Maybe the word got out that I serve the good stuff!

I like these little birds because they get along so well with the other species that land on the feeders and hop around on the ground—especially finches and juncos.

I thought that once the snow melted they would probably disappear since I’m not used to seeing American Tree Sparrows around here in winter, but instead the group has doubled in size.

Here’s more interesting information about American Tree Sparrows from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology: “In summer, American Tree Sparrows breed near the northern treeline, where straggling thickets of alder, willow, birch, and spruce give way to open tundra. Though some American Tree Sparrows nest in open tundra, most territories include at least a few small trees that the males can sing from, along with a source of water.”
