When I was a kid, my mom grew dill in her garden. It always attracted swallowtail butterflies.
All it takes is one whiff of dill and I’m transported back to lazy summer days and a beautiful garden full of butterflies.
I sprouted some dill plants from seed this year. Yesterday morning I was excited to find some teeny tiny Eastern Black Swallowtail Caterpillars on them.
When they are very new, they are black with tiny spikes and a little “saddle”:
