My impulse purchase for this spring was a Sunfinity sunflower. I’ve never had luck with sunflowers because chipmunks and squirrels always dig up the plants or destroy the blooms before I can enjoy them. I took a gamble that they might leave a hybrid sunflower alone.
Sunfinity sunflowers are supposed to bloom all summer long and don’t set seed (so shouldn’t attract beasts). They sport an abundance of 3-4″ flowers that don’t need deadheading although I’ll probably do it anyway just to keep things tidy.
The plants grow 3 to 4 feet tall, and the cheery little flowers are supposed to make good cut flowers. They don’t drop pollen either.
They sound like a perfect little science experiment, don’t they? When you visit the website it even shows a photo of a lab!
I’d be happy to share good ol’-fashioned sunflowers with the critters once the blooms are done, but the beasts have never give me a chance. So I’m willing to try this Sunfinity sunflower to see if I can enjoy the beauty of sunflowers without the frustration! My plant has been growing in my flowerbed for 3 weeks now, and so far nothing has bothered it. Stay tuned!
