I love snapdragons because they’re colorful and they remind me of growing up and simpler times. But best of all, who can resist watching a bumblebee’s fuzzy backside disappear into one of the flowers?
I added a few purchased snapdragons to my flowerbeds this year. This is ‘Snapshot Orange’:
These front-of-the-border dwarf snaps grow 6 to 10 inches tall with eye-catching, dark-orange flowers.
Snapdragons grow best in the cooler conditions of spring and fall, so they may poop out on you in the heat of July and August. But if you keep them watered, they’ll start blooming again in late summer and early fall.
This cultivar (like most snapdragons) is frost and cold tolerant. In early May I accidentally left a flat of plants outside when we had a near-freezing night. The vincas and tomatoes in that flat were NOT HAPPY and let me know with droopy pathetic leaves the next morning. But the snapdragons, including this one, simply shrugged off the cold and looked the same as they did they day before.
‘Snapshot Orange’ is also drought-tolerant and does best in full sun.
