The Sharp-shinned Hawk continues to hunt regularly on our block, so some days the birds are scarce. It finally snowed more than a dusting over the weekend and then it got very cold and windy. The backyard feeders were suddenly very popular.
My little window microphone picked up the sound of the hawk before I saw it. Soon he swooped down for a kill (swing and a miss!) and the birds scattered and didn’t return for the rest of the day. I felt bad for them since it was so cold, and they need to eat a lot to maintain a safe body temperature. But a hawk needs to eat too. I’d just rather not witness it first-hand! I’m sure the songbirds have plenty of other places to find easy food when my backyard is a danger zone.
