A Bright Spot in Winter

My favorite winter visitor is the Red-breasted Nuthatch. They are irruptive so they only winter here every couple of years. They migrate depending on the availability of conifer seeds in the northern forests.

One appeared at my feeder last week after a big storm had passed. In the years when I have Red-breasted Nuthatches, they arrive much earlier. It’s also a little odd that this bird appears to be on his own. He’s been helping himself to nuts and suet for days now, so I’m hoping he plans to stick around.

Red-breasted Nuthatches are comical, spirited and quite tame. They make winter birdwatching a treat.
