Thirsty Birds

The birds and honeybees are visiting the birdbaths so often these days that I have to refill them several times a day. Everyone is thirsty.

We experienced one of the driest Septembers on record through the middle of the month with no rain whatsoever, but ended the month with one of the top 10 wettest Septembers on record. However that rain fell over just 2 days, and since then we haven’t seen another drop.

I like to put a trellis near my birdbaths, so the birds feel like there’s some protection from predators who might swoop through the yard. It also helps prevent fighting as the birds line up to wait their turn to drink or bathe.

I have a lot of American Goldfinches right now. The other day I counted 50 of them!

Fall migration is winding down, but the year-round birds are still visiting the feeders and baths like this Northern Cardinal who is replacing feathers (molting).
