Last week on a late-afternoon walk through our neighborhood, I counted seventeen squirrels on the side of one neighbor’s yard!
The interesting part is that I didn’t see a single nut tree (like an oak or walnut) in the vicinity, and this neighbor didn’t have any bird feeders. I have never seen that many squirrels at once anywhere, and I have no idea why they found that location so ideal.
I could probably rival that neighbor with turkeys. A crowd of them are still visiting my yard several times a day.
A nice little flock of Dark-eyed Juncos has arrived for winter. I toss millet on the ground for them, but they have to be quick or the turkeys gobble (see what I did there?) it all up first.
And each time a cold front moves through I expect the Red-wing Blackbirds to finally leave for their winter grounds, but every morning when I poke my head outside it still sounds like a marsh.
