My Crazy Jumping Squirrel

Don’t fall for that innocent look. This squirrel is a beast, and he’s driving me crazy!

Back in December I guessed his vertical jump was about 4 feet. But I’ve since seen him launch 6 feet into the air from the ground and successfully grab onto our platform feeder.

That means baffles are barely a match for this jumper. Although thankfully it takes a lot of energy to jump 6 feet in the air, so he only pulls out that trick as a desperate measure.

In the meantime he walks around the feeders doing math calculations. When he has reached the solution, he puts the squirrel calculator away and quickly jumps from one pole to the other and one baffle to the other in steps like Spider-Man running up buildings.

I’ve moved the feeder stations and baffles around so many times this spring I’ve lost count. And yet he’s managed to outwit me every time!
