Earlier this month I saw a flash of white in the shrub in front of our house. Upon closer inspection I was thrilled to see that the leucistic American Goldfinch is back!
When he first showed up in the winter of 2022, he was constantly picked on by the other birds. Last winter he was holding his own and fought back when they tried to bully him from the feeders. This year they treat him like a regular.
Because he isn’t bright-yellow in summer like other goldfinch males, it’s doubtful he can attract a mate.
I think he’s a handsome little fella, and I’m so glad to see he’s still alive, healthy and thriving!
