Woodpecker Confusion

Many people, upon spotting a Red-bellied Woodpecker for the first time, think they’re seeing a Red-headed Woodpecker. It makes perfect sense. The bird has shrieking scarlet-red feathers on its head and nape, doesn’t it? And where is this so-called red belly anyway?

The more rare Red-headed Woodpecker looks like the flag of Egypt. Its feathers are in very distinct sections of red, white and black. The entire bird’s head is a gorgeous ruby red as compared to the Red-bellied Woodpecker who looks like he’s sporting a red Mohawk hairstyle.

Red-bellied Woodpeckers move very fast at the feeders, but if you’re lucky you’ll eventually catch a glimpse of the tiny patch of red that earned him his name:
