To some, “road trip” means tossing a water bottle and some snacks in the car and heading off on an impromptu adventure to perhaps look at nature, go on a picnic or visit a museum or restaurant. To others (lets just say a family that includes civil engineers) it means donning hard hats and safety vests and driving 50 miles to a construction site. Do we know how to shake things up, or what?
Actually, it was quite interesting. Our tour took us to the north side of Lake Delton at Highway A where on June 9, flooding rains caused the 267-acre lake to overflow Highway A and begin trickling into the Wisconsin River on the other side of the highway. Soon a 400-foot section of the road gave way and within two hours 600 million gallons of water rushed through the breach, emptying the lake and washing away 3 houses and damaging 2 others beyond repair.
Five months later the lake looks like this:
This picture was taken from the spot where the houses once stood:
Construction is humming along on Highway A and the river side of the highway:
We weren’t the only ones having fun. A crew from Wisconsin Public Television also stopped by to film the construction action:

Dear Em,
Quite a road trip you and your fellow engineers took!! What an interesting project to see. Your pictures are great!
I suppose as the project progresses, you’ll have to go back again to check on how things are going?
Love, ear
