In the spring I was doing some weeding and came upon a tiny butterfly bush seedling. I was going to yank it out and toss it in the compost pile, but I then I remembered that I had a bare spot in one of my daylily beds. I stuck it in there and promptly forgot about it.
It was only about 3 inches tall when I transplanted it, but three months later it’s 3 feet tall and full of blooms.
I’m pretty sure it’s ‘Royal Red’. I haven’t grown that cultivar in years, so when I hand-tilled the soil in early spring I must have exposed an old seed.
‘Royal Red’ grows 5 to 6 feet tall with royal purple flowers that are adored by bees and butterflies.
