Several weeks ago a flock of Cedar Waxwings descended on our neighborhood. It always takes me awhile to realize they are present because their call is very high-pitched and blends in easily with other background noises. The birds were hunting for insects in the very tops of the trees.
Cedar Waxwings eat insects, but they absolutely love berries. They’ll even eat fermenting berries which can cause intoxication. As a child I found more than a few drowned Cedar Waxwings in our birdbath.
It’s fun to watch them dart from the tree branches to catch insects. They are usually so high in our oaks that I need binoculars for the best view.
When a flock has devoured all the food in a given area, they fly off in search of their next meal, and the neighborhood becomes quiet once again.
