Whoops, I completely forgot about my heucheras when I mulched all my tender plants a few weeks ago. I have at least a dozen different cultivars scattered throughout my flowerbeds.
I had trouble overwintering heucheras until I learned that they have a tendency to heave out of the ground in late winter and early spring and become vulnerable to the elements. Last year I mulched all of my plants and didn’t lose a single one. Many of them still popped out of the ground, but they were protected by the mulch.
As long as they stay buried in a blanket of snow they have a fighting chance, but I may have to embark on a rescue mission once the snow begins to melt.
