Blah blah blah…8-14 more inches of snow on the way. If this keeps up, I will be spending Christmas in a rubber room. Thank goodness I took so many photos of my flowers to remind me that somewhere under all that white stuff is a garden.
I just love zinnias. One of my favorites is the Sun series. Many taller zinnias don’t like to be started indoors, but these sprout effortlessly and transplant well. You can also sow the seeds outside when the soil has warmed, but I like to get a head start.
The Sun zinnias grow 24-30 inches tall with big blooms up to 5 inches across. There are three colors including the vibrant ‘Sun Red’ (pictured above).
There’s also ‘Sun Gold’:
And the beauty of the bunch….’Sun Cherry’, which looks particularly smashing next to blue salvias:

Pretty flowers. My Zinnias did not do well this year. I was amazed at their drought tolerance in the early spring, but as summer in Austin came, it was too hot and dry. I did not get one full flower.
Looks like I have to try again next year!
Wow, I didn’t know it was possible for it to be too hot and dry for zinnias, but I guess every plant has its limit. Hopefully you’ll have better weather next summer. Otherwise, I could send some truckloads of snow to cool things down. I’ve got plenty to share!
