Wisconsin has a healthy Bald Eagle population, and the best time to view the birds is in the winter along the open waters of the Wisconsin River. We drove to Prairie du Sac over the weekend to catch a glimpse of them in action (or sometimes inaction):
The birds sit in the big trees surrounding the river where they gaze and preen. Occasionally they leave their perches to hunt for fish with strange-sounding names like sauger and gizzard shad. There are currently more than 100 eagles living in the area, and we saw about 30 of them.
Just north of town there’s a hydroelectric dam where the water never freezes. From the parking lot you can watch the birds soar and dive for fish.
