No matter what time of year it is, I can always count on seeing White-breasted Nuthatches at my feeders. These sassy little birds are easily identifiable by their ability to feed upside-down.
While other birds scatter when I step outside, nuthatches aren’t afraid of me. In fact, on more than one occasion a nuthatch has landed on the feeder just as I’m reaching up to open the top and pour in some fresh seed. If I stand motionless the bird will blink at me a few times, rummage around for the perfect morsel and then fly away to the nearest oak tree.
The nuthatches in my neighborhood like sunflower seeds, but they seem particularly fond of peanuts.
