The puffed-up Mourning Doves aren’t alone out there in the perpetually cold, dreary weather. I’m seeing and hearing more birds every day. The spring migration has begun!
My apple tree will be disappointed to know that the Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers have returned. I’ve also spotted Fox Sparrows and a Catbird.
I have flocks of Juncos jumping around my flowerbeds looking for insects, and my harbinger of spring—the homely Cowbird— has finally made an appearance at my feeder.
Some people might wonder about my excitement over such run-of-the-mill birds, but their presence can only mean that it’s a matter of days before the beautiful warblers, grosbeaks and tanagers brighten my neighborhood again.
