Every once in awhile I get the urge to sprout dahlias from seed. They are easy to grow and don’t need any special care in the garden. The only reason I don’t grow them every year is because the Japanese Beetles love to chomp on the flowers.
Last year I grew ‘Figaro Red Shades’. The plants top out at 14 to 18 inches and can be grown in sun or part-shade. They survived the excessive heat like champs last summer and were the prettiest plants in my garden in August and early September:
The reason my dahlias thrived last summer is because the Japanese Beetles were much too busy destroying my roses to care about some pesky dahlias. Now I have a false sense of security.
I’ve decided to revel in that false sense of security and try dahlias again. This year I’m also going to sprout ‘Figaro Orange Shades’ and ‘Figaro Yellow Shades’.
