For the second year in a row I sprouted Kong Coleus plants from seed. This time I wanted to display several 14-inch pots of these beauties along the walkway to my front door (3 plants to a pot). Despite the drought and the melt-your-face-off temperatures this summer, my plants are performing beautifully.
I grew the beautiful ‘Kong Rose’ again:
But this year I also experimented with ‘Kong Red’:
The darker leaves make a nice contrast to ‘Kong Rose’ and other plants with bright-green leaves.
The Kong Coleus series plants grow about 2 feet tall and thrive in shady locations. They are ridiculously easy to start from seed, but you’ll pay about $4.25 for 10 seeds. However, that’s still MUCH cheaper than you’ll pay for plants in the garden centers.
Just like last year, my plants have had zero disease or insect problems. Well, okay, that’s not entirely true. But as long as you don’t have pesky squirrels dropping acorns from 70 feet above your plants like I do, you won’t have to worry about shredded leaves.
I highly recommend Kong Coleus.
