I love bold colors in my flowerbeds, but all the red, yellow and orange can get a little monotonous. That’s why I love coral zinnias. They add a little bit of flair. My favorite short coral zinnia is ‘Dreamland Coral’ (12 inches), but when I’m looking for something tall ‘Park’s Picks Coral’ fits the bill.
The photos online and in the Park Seed catalog don’t do this cultivar any justice. They look like boring, orange zinnias.
This is what the flowers really look like:
‘Park’s Picks Coral’ zinnias grow 40 to 50 inches tall in full sun or partial shade. You can sprout the seeds outdoors in the spring after the last average frost date, or indoors about a month before that date.
If you deadhead the flowers, zinnias will continue to bloom until frost. Occasionally zinnias will develop powdery mildew. And Japanese beetles will chomp on the flower petals (unless you’re kind like me and give them plenty of roses to destroy), but other than that, zinnias are relatively carefree plants.
